Whispering of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara was commissioned by American violinist Hilary Hahn as part of her CD project Encores. During her stage life Hilary Hahn noticed a lack of exciting works by contemporary composers to dazzle audiences at the end of concerts. Whispering is Rautavaara's encore piece for Hilary Hahn and his contribution to her interesting project.
