Handmade in Europe, set up by our own violin maker
Handmade double basses from Europe, with an ebony fingerboard, solid tuning machines and strings by D'Addario or Thomastik. Every double bass is fully set up by our violin maker, including the height of the bridge, so that it plays easily. Dutch double bass teachers prefer European instruments; only the 1/16 sometimes comes from China.
Every double bass goes through our workshop
Bridge, soundpost, strings and pegs are adjusted before an instrument leaves the shop, and again when you change size. That is why we choose European instruments: Dutch teachers prefer them, and we can maintain them.

Our rental double basses come in three quality classes. All classes are handmade and fully set up. The difference is in the wood and therefore in the sound: laminated, a solid top, or fully solid. For the first year, Budget is more than enough; you can always move up.

A double bass cannot go by parcel service. Collecting is free and our preference: the right size is usually in the shop. We deliver ourselves, within 100 km of The Hague.

Collect in The Hague without an appointment free
Prins Mauritsplein 19, Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 16.30. We adjust the double bass to the player on the spot; often you can take it home the same day. Bring a form of ID.

Delivered to your door € 14.95
South and North Holland, Utrecht and Flevoland, up to 100 km from The Hague: including Delft, Leiden, Zoetermeer, Rotterdam, Gouda, Dordrecht, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Hilversum and Almere. Delivery usually takes 4 to 7 working days after we receive payment. For delivery you pay the first quarter in advance and send a copy of your ID with it.

Insurance and maintenance
For € 4 to € 6 per month you are insured against damage and pay nothing extra for maintenance, such as replacing strings or having the bow rehaired. Read what is and is not covered.

Rent by the quarter
Three months is the minimum rental period; after that the rental continues per quarter. There is no need to give notice: bring the double bass back and the rental stops, including the direct debit.

How much does it cost to rent a double bass?
Double bass rental costs € 26 to € 48 per month with us, depending on size and class. You pay quarterly in advance. At the start the one-off deposit is added, which you get back when you return the instrument. The prices below are starting prices per month, including VAT; the starting amount for each size and class is in the price table below the worked example.

Which double bass size do you need?
Choose the size that fits best and we check it when you collect or we deliver. When your child grows out of it, we change the size for free, at any time. Our smallest double bass is a 1/16, for children from about five; most adults play 3/4.

Height and age are a guideline; the arm length, measured from the shoulder joint to the tip of the middle finger, is decisive.

Frequently asked questions about double bass rental
Rental period and ending the rental
You rent by the quarter; three months is the minimum period. There is no need to give notice: bring the double bass back to the shop and the rental agreement ends, including the direct debit. An invoice already sent for the next quarter is cancelled if the instrument is back in time. You bring it back to the shop, or we collect the instrument from you for € 14.95. You get the deposit back within a few days.
A small double bass for a child
Yes, we have them: 1/16, 1/10 and 1/8 are real small double basses for children from about five, with the same tuning and the same string spacing in proportion. Children usually grow out of them within one to two years; changing to a larger size is free.
Rent or buy a double bass?
A good double bass costs € 1,700 to € 2,600 new, plus bow and cover. Renting is the logical choice while a child is growing or you do not yet know whether the instrument suits you. Yes. Three months is the minimum rental period; after that the rental continues per quarter until you bring the double bass back. For a trial period, a course or a project that is usually just right.
Summer holidays
In the first three to four weeks of the school holidays in the central Netherlands we do not deliver or collect instruments. Collecting from the shop is still possible.
