Handmade in Europe, set up by our own violin maker
Handmade violas from Europe with a solid wood body, an ebony fingerboard, chinrest and pegs, a Wittner tailpiece with fine tuners, strings by D'Addario, Thomastik or Pirastro, and a Wolf shoulder rest. Dutch viola teachers prefer European instruments; only in the Budget class do we sometimes use Stentor or Gewa.
Every viola goes through our workshop
Bridge, soundpost, strings and pegs are adjusted before an instrument leaves the shop, and again when you change size. That is why we choose European instruments: Dutch teachers prefer them, and we can maintain them.

Our rental violas come in three quality classes, plus Premium+ in 15 inch. All classes are handmade and well set up. The difference is in sound and playability, not in build quality. For the first year, Advanced is more than enough; you can always move up.

Collecting is free and fastest: the right size is usually in the shop. Shipping is possible anywhere in the Netherlands; the viola goes well packed in a box by PostNL, DHL or DPD.

Prins Mauritsplein 19, Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 16.30. We adjust the viola to the player on the spot; often you can take it home the same day. Bring a form of ID.

Anywhere in the Netherlands, by PostNL, DHL or DPD. Keep the box: you use it again to send the instrument back or exchange it. For shipping you pay the first quarter in advance and email a copy of your ID.

Insurance and maintenance
For € 2 to € 7 per month you are insured against damage and pay nothing extra for maintenance, such as replacing strings or having the bow rehaired. Read what is and is not covered.

Rent by the quarter
Three months is the minimum rental period; after that the rental continues per quarter. There is no need to give notice: bring the viola back and the rental stops, including the direct debit.

How much does it cost to rent a viola?
Viola rental costs € 13 to € 40 per month with us, depending on size and class. You pay quarterly in advance. For Budget and Advanced there is no deposit; for Premium and Premium+ a one-off deposit is added, which you get back when you return the instrument. The prices below are starting prices per month, including VAT; the starting amount for each size and class is in the price table below the worked example.

Per month, including VAT and excluding shipping costs. Insurance is optional; the deposit is one-off and refunded when you return the instrument. At the start you pay three months of rent and insurance plus the deposit; shipping adds a one-off € 9.95.

Which viola size do you need?
Choose the size that fits best and we check it when you collect or before shipping. When your child grows out of it, we change the size for free, at any time. Violas are measured in inches, the length of the body; children start on 1/8.
Viola sizes: the size chart from 1/8 to 16 inch
Measure the arm length from the armpit to the tip of the middle finger, with the arm stretched out: that is decisive, the age is a guideline. Adults choose between 14, 15 and 16 inch by arm length and build; we are happy to discuss that in the shop.

Frequently asked questions about viola rental
Rental period and ending the rental
You rent by the quarter; three months is the minimum period. There is no need to give notice: bring the viola back to the shop and the rental agreement ends, including the direct debit. An invoice already sent for the next quarter is cancelled if the instrument is back in time. You can bring it back to the shop, or send it by PostNL or DHL in a sturdy box to Van Weede van Dijkveldstraat 93, 2582 KT The Hague. If a deposit was paid, you get it back within a few days.
Rent or buy a viola?
A good viola costs € 300 to € 2,500 new, plus bow and case. Renting is the logical choice while a child is growing, when switching from violin to viola, or if you do not yet know whether the instrument suits you. Want to keep the rental viola later?
