The theme that served as the basis for Weber's present variations (composed in 1804) comes from Abbé Vogler's opera Samori, with whom he was a pupil in Vienna from 1803 to 1804. The Variations, Op. 6, were apparently written at Vogler's instigation. Weber originally planned variations on five further themes from the opera, but Vogler ultimately wrote these himself. This practical edition follows the text of the Weber Complete Edition.
