Pablo Martin Melitón de Sarasate y Navascués (10 March 1844 – 20 September 1908) was a Spanish violinist and composer. De Sarasate studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Alard and others from 1856 to 1859, after having performed at the Spanish court at the age of ten. He was a virtuoso violinist and showed great technical giftedness. His delivery was generally restrained. Many composers dedicated works to De Sarasate, including Max Bruch, Édouard Lalo, and Camille Saint-Saëns. De Sarasate also composed a number of works himself, including Spanish Dances, Romance et Gavotte de Mignon, the Sérénade Andalouse, and Zigeunerweisen. His compositions are generally virtuosic in style and based on Spanish folk music. His work was performed at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition for violin in 1971, 2005, and 2009. In 2017, it was also performed at the first edition for cello.
