The poem "Gruselett" is taken from Christian Morgenstern's "Gallows Songs" (1905). The English translation used here was prepared by the composer himself. Priority was given to the sound and "speechability" of the words to facilitate performance. The interplay between words and music is best achieved when all three instrumentalists play and speak simultaneously, although theoretically the playing and speaking parts can be performed by different people. The spoken and instrumental parts should be learned like two-part inventions on the piano, as the rhythmic flow arises from the interplay of speaking and playing. A certain degree of theatricality enhances the dark, mysterious aspect of the piece and demands imaginative use of the voice from the performer. The composer wrote the piece for a young string trio from Neuss, who successfully performed it at the "Jugend musiziert" competition in 2008.
