The Gavotte, Op. 112, is an effectively and multifacetedly stylized dance that presents advanced students with demanding challenges. These challenges are tailored to the instrument and its technical capabilities: for example, the rapid sixteenth-note figures are easy to play, yet simultaneously create a virtuosic effect. Prerequisites for learning the composition include a skilled command of pitches up to the sixth position, experience with thumb position and harmonics, proficiency in playing double stops and ornaments, and good left-hand fluency. Musically, the Gavotte offers the opportunity to portray different characters: it requires the creation of light, airy motifs, broad, energetic chords, as well as fast, virtuosic passages. The piano part is simply written and largely confined to a supporting accompaniment function. 16 pages. Grade 3.
