The Czech cellist and composer Jiří Mokry was born in Prague in 1892. He studied at the Prague Conservatory (1906–1912), was a member of the Czech Philharmonic (1912–1914), and after military service in the First World War, joined the orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague (1919), then the orchestra of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, and later the East Bohemian Theatre in Pardubice (1929). He subsequently ran his own music school in Prague (1930–1949). He wrote works for cello (including a concerto), serenades, student concertos, approximately 100 pieces for violin and piano, as well as songs and choral works.
