Wolfgang Birtel, born on May 31, 1951, was a research associate at the musicological institutes in Saarbrücken and Mainz for ten years and headed the music archive of ZDF Mainz from 1984 to 2004. Since then, he has worked freelance as a music journalist, arranger, music editor, and musician. Wolfgang Birtel is represented in the Edition Dohr series as both an editor and arranger; among other works, over 100 string quartet arrangements of popular classics have been published in the series "Der musikalische Salon" (The Musical Salon), and numerous arrangements for other instrumentations have appeared in other series (see overview on the right). Described here as a "competent and versatile arranger" (Frank Klüger, in: nmz 12/11-1/12, p. 44), he presents sophisticated light music in sonorous arrangements that are accessible even to amateurs but also offer something of interest to professionals.
