Arcangelo Corelli (Fusignano (Imola), 17 February 1653 – Rome, 8 January 1713) was an Italian violinist, composer, and music teacher. He studied in Bologna and around 1685 moved to Rome, where he published his first sonatas for the violin. He lived in the palace of his patron Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. Corelli also visited Modena and Naples. He conducted at the Roman residence of Christina of Sweden and taught many violin students, including Francesco Geminiani and Pietro Locatelli. His works were extremely popular throughout Europe. His oeuvre includes a series of twelve concerti grossi, two series of twelve sonatas da camera (so-called chamber sonatas, for two violins, violone and harpsichord; singular sonata d.c.), two sets of twelve sonatas da chiesa (church sonatas, also set as trio sonatas, with basso per l’organo), twelve sonatas for one violin and basso continuo, etc.
